Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Stamped and decorative concrete

Decorative concrete is where this business started: the Better Business Bureau has listed Hernandez Concrete Design under Decorative Concrete since 2006.

What stamped concrete is

Stamped concrete is poured like a standard slab, colored, and then pressed with patterned mats while it's still workable. The result can resemble flagstone, slate, cobblestone, brick or wood plank, as one continuous surface without the joints of individual pavers.

Color is typically built in two layers: an integral or broadcast base color, plus a release agent in a contrasting tone that settles into the texture and gives the pattern depth.

Keeping it looking right

Decorative concrete is sealed after installation, and resealing every few years keeps color rich and protects against staining and freeze-thaw moisture. Keeping deicing salt off the surface — especially in the first winter — makes a real difference to how it ages.

Common questions

Is stamped concrete slippery?

Sealers can make any smooth surface slicker when wet. A slip-resistant additive can be mixed into the sealer for pool decks, steps and walkways.

Stamped concrete or pavers?

Stamped concrete is one continuous slab, so weeds can't grow between units, but repairs are harder to make invisible. Pavers can be lifted and reset individually. Price ranges overlap — see the cost guide.

Does stamped concrete crack?

All concrete can crack. Control joints are planned into the pattern so cracking happens where it's least visible, and good base preparation reduces the risk.
